How to create and activate an A/B test

Before You Start

  • You need a paid Atomicat plan.
  • Control and variant pages must already be published on the same site.
  • Those pages must stay published while the test is running (unpublish is blocked until you archive the test).
  • Decide the public entry path visitors will hit (for example /black-friday). That path must not already be a published page slug outside this test.

New to A/B testing? Read the A/B testing overview and test types first.

Step 1: Open A/B Tests

  1. In the Atomicat platform sidebar, open A/B Tests.
  2. Click Create A/B Test.

Step 2: Choose the test type

Pick one of:

  • Atomicat page variant (same public URL; add 2+ variants as needed)
  • Split URL (redirects to each variant’s own page URL)
  • External redirect

Step 3: Configure entry URL and variants

  1. Enter a test name and optional hypothesis.
  2. Select the site and entry slug (Atomicat builds the public URL for you).
  3. For each variant, select a published page or enter an external destination URL.
  4. Adjust traffic sliders until the total is 100%.

Step 4: Choose the primary goal

Select what you want Analytics to optimize for:

  • Traffic split only (no Atomicat conversion goal — measure sales elsewhere)
  • Checkout click
  • Any button click
  • Click selector (requires CSS selector)
  • URL visit (Atomicat page or external URL text)

Not sure which one? See How to set up A/B test goals.

Step 5: Save and activate

  1. Click Save draft.
  2. On the test card, click Activate.
  3. Wait for success confirmation.

Activation deploys edge routing for that entry path and marks the test as running. If a variant page is unpublished, activation fails until you publish it again.

Step 6: Verify

  1. Open the public entry URL in a private window.
  2. Confirm you land on one of the variants.
  3. Click View in Analytics on the test card to open results with the experiment preselected.

FAQ

Can I run two tests on the same site?

Yes, as long as they use different entry paths. Two running tests cannot share the same path.

What can I edit after the test is running?

Only the name and hypothesis. Site, entry URL, variants, traffic split, and goal are locked so analytics stay comparable. Archive the test and create a new one if you need a different setup.

What if activation fails?

Check that every variant page is published, the site is Bunny or AWS, and no other active test already uses the same entry path. After archiving and unpublishing a page, republish it before activating again.

Can I unpublish a variant page during the test?

No. Archive the test first. Then you can unpublish. Activate will require the pages to be published again.
